If you know us, you know that we are fascinated by fabrics and their unique histories. Toile scenics are a personal favorite and we'd like to share the origin of this incredible fabric.
Toile is a printed cotton or linen carrying a repeating pictorial scene — figures, buildings, animals, landscapes — almost always in a single color on a pale ground. The word is simply French for cloth. What people usually mean by it is Toile de Jouy, the eighteenth-century French version that gave the whole category its name.
Origins and Early Development: Tracing Toile's Global Roots
Imagine a time when continents connected through trade, and fabrics echoed tales of distant lands. In the heart of Europe, the fascination with printed fabrics from India bloomed, courtesy of the East India Company's influence. These intercontinental exchanges gave birth to toile fabric, a remarkable blend of cultures and craftsmanship.
The Rise of Toile de Jouy: Where Craftsmanship Meets Artistry
A stroll through idyllic scenes, delicate florals, and intricate landscapes — such is the enchanting world of Toile de Jouy. This iconic style emerged in the 18th century, thanks to the visionary mind of Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf and his Jouy-en-Josas factory. Here, a fusion of artistry and craftsmanship breathed life into the Toile de Jouy style, making it a beloved treasure.

Toile Across Europe and Beyond: A World of Inspiration
Once the popularity of toile stretched beyond France, its timeless pastoral prints began to transcend boundaries. Cultures from diverse corners of the globe, most specifically Asia, infused their unique essence into this fabric, giving rise to a kaleidoscope of designs.
Toile in the New World: Stitching History into Design
Toile's legacy found a new canvas in North America. Colonial interiors embraced the elegance of toile, and early settlers created their own versions of the style embedding it in tales of progress, dreams, and transformation.

Revivals and Contemporary Interpretations: A Timeless Comeback
Time has a way of breathing new life into cherished classics. Toile fabric experienced revivals throughout history, infusing fresh perspectives into its timeless charm. From the grandeur of the Victorian era to the avant-garde of the 20th century, designers elevated toile into a canvas for creative expression. Common questions about toile
What is toile fabric?
A cotton or linen printed with a repeating pictorial scene — people, buildings, animals, landscapes — usually in one color on a pale ground. "Toile" is French for cloth; the pictorial style is what the word has come to mean in English.
What does Toile de Jouy mean?
Cloth from Jouy. It refers to Jouy-en-Josas, the town outside Paris where Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf's factory produced the most famous of these prints from the 1760s onward. The factory building is now a museum.
Why is toile usually printed in only one color?
Because of how it was made. Early toiles were printed from engraved copperplates, and each additional color meant another plate and another pass. A single color let printers hold very fine detail — which is what makes the scenes legible at all.
What colors does toile come in?
Traditionally indigo blue, red, black or sepia on cream. Contemporary toile goes anywhere — we have made it in cerulean, emerald, scarlet and sapphire, among others.
Is toile still in style?
It never really leaves. Dior, Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood have all worked in toile, and it returns every few seasons in a different register. The reason is probably that it does something few prints do: it tells a story you can actually read.
Is toile only for interiors?
It began in dress fabric and moved into furnishings, not the other way around. Scale is what decides it — a print sized for a sofa overwhelms a bag, which is why we choose and scale ours for the piece they are going on.
What is toile made of?
Cotton or linen, historically. Both take a fine printed line well and wear in rather than out, which is why the fabric has lasted as long as it has.

I like English toiles that tell a story of a particular estate- thirty five years ago I did a guest room in a toile that featured the special breed of deer given to the Lord of the Manor by a chinese emperor- what you learn about toiles is that it’s never too much- I did the walls and the bedding – last year I was doing a home that was completed in the Chinese year of the rabbit – so I did the granddaughters room in a toile that featured bunnies – all over! Toile is like leopard – never out of style
